Living in Harsh Conditions and Need a Tough Lawn?

Choosing the right grass for your lawn can be a difficult process. The choice you make will depend largely on the climate you live in, as well as personal preference. For those living in harsh climates, there are several good choices when it comes to grass types. Australia is known for its heat and humidity, and cooler winter months. Therefore requires grasses that are well adapted to living in that sort of climate. Let’s look at some of the tougher grass types available.

            Sapphire Buffalo

This is one of the best all around grass types on the market today. First discovered in 2002, Sapphire Buffalo is extremely resistant to the cold and can withstand degrees as low as -10 Celsius. With its deep root system, the grass will also maintain its color during the winter months. In addition, Sapphire Buffalo performs equally well in hot climates, is very resistant to drought, and needs a relatively small amount of watering. If you are looking for an all around tough grass that requires relatively little maintenance, that will not create thatching issues and will stand up well against both hot and cold weather, Sapphire Buffalo is a great choice.

            Zoysia Grass

Zoysia is a grass species native to Asia, Australia, and much of the pacific. It’s well known for its incredible amount of tolerance to warm climates and stands up relatively well in colder areas. Additionally, it is one of the more heat resistant grass types. Australia, being as hot as it is, commonly uses Zoysia in lawns and public spaces. The main drawback of Zoysia is that it’s not known for being particularly drought resistant. It will therefore require a large amount of irrigation in drier climates.

            Kikuyu Grass

This is a species native to Eastern Africa, and the area of the Gikuyu tribe, from which it gets its name. This grass type has become extremely popular in areas such as Australia, New Zealand, and many other pacific islands. Mostly due to quick growth rate, the ability to withstand severe drought conditions, and affordability. Kikuyu has the advantage of being incredibly easy to cultivate. Additionally, it can spread so quickly that many places actually consider it a noxious weed. Luckily these properties make it ideal for lawns and fields, and the species is very often used as turf for golf courses.

If you live in an area that has weather conditions that prove harsh to growing grass, there are clearly still a ton of great options when it comes to well-suited grass types. Australia has extreme weather conditions depending on where you live. It’s important to find a grass that is well suited to that sort of climate. No matter what you choose, what’s important is that you choose a grass type that will thrive wherever it is that you live!
